COMPREHENSIVE EYE EXAM
DRY EYE EVALUATION BY LICENSED OPTOMETRISTS
Many things can contribute to dry eye such as certain medications you take, inflammatory or immune medical conditions, workplace habits, wind, dry climate, smoking and age. Long term use of contact lenses and refractive surgery can also worsen dry eye symptoms.
At your comprehensive eye exam at Eyes on Avenue we look closely at the ocular surface and tear film using high magnification, lighting and certain diagnostic imaging and dyes. We examine the glands that produce oils for the surface of the eye to ensure they are patent and working adequately. If it is determined that the ocular surface is dry or you are experiencing dry eye symptoms, the optometrist may recommend eye drops, an eye mask, eyelid hygiene and/or nutraceuticals in order to manage any surface inflammation or improve the comfort of your eyes. They may also recommend an in-office "eye hygiene" appointment.

In-Office Eye Hygiene Treatment

More than 85% of "dry eyes" are actually caused by problems on the eyelid margin. It’s actually the dirt, debris, and oil residue along the edge of your eyelids which can cause your eyes to feel dry, itchy, sandy or scratchy. Each blink brings more and more unnatural components onto the tear film that coats the eye. This can cause the eye to look red and tired.
To combat this inflammatory eyelid issue, our doctors perform in-office lid scrubs using the "ZEST" method - a gentle, convenient, and effective protocol which addresses almost any eyelid issue, including dry eye, demodex, blepharitis, and inflammation. This affordable treatment provides immediate relief to most patients seen at Eyes on Avenue. If you have been unsuccessful using antibiotics, steroids, eye drops, prescription dry eye medications, and/or other in-office treatments in the past, schedule an appointment with one of our doctors for specialty dry eye care.

We compliment your in-office ZEST treatment with simple and inexpensive at-home maintenance for chronic dry eye. Our convenient Toronto office offers the full Zocular line, including gel, foam, and wipes.
In-Office Diagnostics

Pictured below is meibomography - infrared imaging of the meibomian glands. This allows viewing of the glands in the eyelid responsible for producing the oily layer of the tear film. When these glands get sick and dropout, they don't come back. Imaging is important for monitoring dry eye over time and evaluating the effectiveness of treatment.
